When Do I Get my Neon Green Pants?

In case you haven't heard, I was recently hired by our beloved coastal Crown corporation to work aboard our ferry link. This is very good news, as it further solidifies the ground beneath us in our new life here on Denman. It's about the best job I could hope to get without commuting off-island all the time. I was over in Vancouver a few weeks ago doing some of the required training, and I've not updated the blog since before then. So lots of positive stuff has been happening for both of us in recent weeks. The hiring is my big news, and I just had a great time with some of the boys in Victoria last weekend at the annual Knuckleheads hockey tournament. Bethany is thriving on Denman, making new friends all the time, kick-starting several promising arts projects and summer music camps for the kids here. We have some visitors coming up this month, and likely every month through the summer -- looking forward to seeing everyone who can stop in.

I have one more week of sea training to complete in Vancouver, followed by some shipboard training time, then I can start taking shifts sometime in June/July. I hope to be aboard for the summer rush and work as much as possible, because my 'casual' employment status means I'll be well down the list for off-season on-call work. I've been through all the documentation they sent, but it's still not clear when/if I'll be issued those sweet day-glow green reflective deck pants.

Congrats on the new gig! Looks like they are giving you a good start with all the training.

Thanks Judge, the Transport Canada required training is pretty easy. I'm sure the hands-on vessel stuff will be a bit more challenging. Remember, in an emergency, your deckhand can be used as a flotation device.
